A cheap move is not only about finding the lowest hourly rate. The biggest saving often comes from reducing the number of hours the moving team needs. Closed, labelled boxes and a vehicle parked at the door can make the work much faster.
The most efficient method is simple: buy strong boxes in matching sizes several weeks ahead, mark the destination room on the top and two sides, group them close to the exit route and reserve parking at both homes. Leave large furniture in place when the movers will dismantle it. You then avoid paying skilled workers to pack loose items or search for the correct room.

1. Choose the right type of move first
There are three sensible ways to move in Brussels. The cheapest option depends on your time, the volume, access to both homes and how much you can safely carry.
A full-service moving company
This works well for a large home, heavy furniture or a tight schedule. Ask for a clear quote that lists the number of movers, vehicle size, furniture lift, travel, insurance, dismantling, reassembly and the price of extra hours. A low hourly rate is poor value if the team is too small or does not bring the right equipment.
A rented van plus a separate furniture lift
If you can carry the boxes yourself, rent a van for one day and book a furniture lift with an operator for the exact loading window. A standard Belgian category B licence normally covers a vehicle with a maximum authorised mass of up to 3,500 kg. Always check the vehicle category, payload, deposit and rental conditions before booking.
A gradual move through a storage unit
Moving alone, waiting for keys or unable to finish in one trip? Use temporary storage in Brussels as a staging point. Move non-essential items early and keep only daily essentials and large furniture for the final day.
2. Four weeks before: declutter and measure
Start with the things that do not need to move. Sell, donate or recycle unwanted items before paying to transport them. Measure large furniture, doorways, stairs and lifts. Check whether a sofa or wardrobe can pass through a window with a furniture lift.
List every item that needs to be dismantled.
Estimate the number of boxes for each room.
Get two or three comparable quotes for a professional move.
Tell the company about floors, small lifts and unusually heavy objects.
Decide what goes straight to the new home and what goes into storage.
Accurate information prevents the wrong van, an unsuitable furniture lift and surprise hours on moving day.
3. Use strong boxes in matching sizes
Matching boxes stack more efficiently in a van, on a lift and inside a storage unit. A mix of open shopping bags, weak boxes and awkward shapes wastes space and slows every movement. Use a standard larger box for light items and smaller boxes for books, dishes and tools.

4. Pack for the destination room
Do not label a box only by where it came from. Write where it must go in the new home: kitchen, bedroom 1, office, bathroom or cellar. Mark the top and at least two sides, so the destination remains visible when boxes are stacked.
Add a number and short description, such as “Kitchen 06 — pans”. Write “FRAGILE” and draw a glass on every visible side if the contents can break. A colour for each room makes sorting even faster. Put the same colour on the relevant door in the new home.
Do not make boxes too heavy. A small box of books is safer than a large one. Close every box fully. Loose objects are dangerous on stairs and may fall from a furniture lift.
5. Create a departure zone near the loading route
Group sealed boxes by room close to the route outside. If the team uses a furniture lift through a window or terrace, prepare the boxes nearby. Let the lift operator confirm the safe position first. Never block an emergency exit or build an unstable stack in front of a window.
The goal is one smooth movement: pick up a box, walk a few metres and place it directly on the lift or in the van. Every avoided trip saves time.
6. Leave large furniture for the professionals
Do not randomly dismantle a large wardrobe the night before if the moving company is meant to do it. Experienced movers know which parts to remove, how to protect panels and in what order to rebuild the item. Confirm in writing whether dismantling and reassembly are included.
Empty drawers, remove fragile parts and keep screws in labelled bags. Take a photograph before dismantling. If you do the work yourself, attach the bag safely to the item or place it in a clearly marked box.
7. Reserve parking at both addresses
A moving van or lift parked fifty metres away can add a great deal of time. Reserve enough space outside the old home and the new one. Apply early through the authority responsible for each address, because rules, lead times and prices differ by municipality.
In the City of Brussels, renting no-parking signs does not reserve the space on its own. A temporary public-road occupation permit is required first. The City asks for the sign request no later than ten working days before placement. For an address in Anderlecht, check the municipality’s current procedure. For any other address, use the relevant municipal website rather than assuming the Brussels City rules apply.
8. Run moving day as one clear chain
Keep one person in charge at the old home, one near the van and one at the destination. Every box goes directly into the room on its label. Do not create one large pile in the entrance hall.
Clear the route and protect the floor before the team arrives.
Point out fragile, heavy and priority items.
Load storage items first if the storage unit is the first stop.
Load first-night boxes last so they come out first.
Check every room, cupboard, cellar and meter before returning the keys.
A well-prepared large home can often be moved in less than a day, but volume, distance, floors and crew size still matter. The aim is to remove wasted time, not to rush unsafely.
9. Save money without arguing on the stairs
Carrying a heavy cabinet down a narrow staircase is slow and risky. It is also an excellent way for two tired people to shout conflicting instructions at each other. A furniture lift places large items directly on the correct floor. It can protect backs, walls, time and sometimes relationships.
Save money on wasted labour: pack, sort and prepare access yourself. Do not cut corners on safe lifting, suitable insurance or vehicle payload.
