Anyone who has renovated a home knows the pattern. At first, one room will hold all the furniture. Then the electrician needs access, the decorator arrives and chairs, boxes and cabinets move yet again. Damage rarely comes from one dramatic accident. More often, it is dust, small knocks, damp materials and weeks of improvisation.

What stays and what goes?

Photograph complex furniture before dismantling it. Put screws and fittings in a sealed bag, label the piece they belong to and attach the bag where it cannot scratch the surface. Reassembly will not become a second project.

Clean everything, then let it dry

Dust and crumbs attract pests; residual moisture can cause smells, mould or corrosion. Vacuum upholstery, clean hard surfaces and allow everything to dry completely. A freshly cleaned rug should not be rolled up the same evening.

Defrost and clean fridges and freezers. Leave the door slightly open so air can circulate. Remove batteries from remote controls and small electronics when it is safe to do so.

Wrap for protection, not airtightness

Use moving blankets or breathable covers around wood and upholstery. Protect corners separately with cardboard. Stretch film can hold a blanket in place, but do not seal furniture airtight if it may still contain moisture.

Glass and mirrors: keep them upright, mark them clearly and never place them flat beneath heavy boxes.
Mattresses: clean and dry, in a suitable cover, stored flat or according to the manufacturer’s advice.
Wood: do not wedge it tightly against a wall; allow some air around the surface.
Boxes: fill them enough to prevent collapse, but not so heavily that they become unsafe to lift.

Load in reverse order

Items you will need first should go in last. Spare paint, cleaning materials and the box of furniture fittings belong near the door. Heavy stable pieces sit at the bottom, with fragile and light objects above. Keep a narrow aisle even if you expect to visit only once.

Make a simple inventory on your phone at the same time: box number, contents and location in the unit. It takes minutes while packing and can save an afternoon of searching later.

How much space do you need?

A dismantled dining table uses less floor area, but long table tops and sofas often determine the minimum unit size. Measure the largest pieces, not just the number of boxes. Add room for an aisle if you may collect anything during the project.
